Bideford Harbour Board is the competent harbour authority for the harbour based in and around the Taw Torridge Estuary, pursuant to the Pilotage Act 1987 and is authorised by Torridge District Council to discharge associated duties. Bideford Harbour is a municipal port operated by Torridge District Council. It is a Statutory Harbour Authority for the river Torridge close to Bideford but is also a Competent Harbour Authority (i.e. responsible for the provision of pilotage and the consequent safety of navigation) for both the rivers Taw and Torridge as well as the estuary waters out to the Bideford Fairway buoy.
